NEWS FROM SUMMER 2017
Just like that, summer is over, and it is already a new season! This year, July and August at the Lighthouse Cafe were very busy for us! We began the month of July observing Independence Day. With all of the renovations taking place, we closed for the holiday which allowed our volunteers to spend this day with their families. Then, July 5th through the 7th, we found a creative way to embrace not having our new stoves installed yet by serving picnic themed bagged lunches to our patrons! Likewise, on July 10th, we had the opportunity to be blessed by the Community United Methodist Church as they shared their kitchen with us, and allowed us to cook warm meals to serve at the Lighthouse Cafe.
Excitingly, our new stoves were ready for us to cook with on July 17th! We made a wonderful meal consisting of: Baked Chicken, Rice topped with Gravy, Green Beans, and Corn Bread. The volunteers, along with the patrons, are just so incredibly thankful to be able to enjoy our newly remodeled kitchen and dining room!
Before we knew it, it was already the first week of August! We started the month off by welcoming four volunteers from the First Baptist Church of Belle Glade. These students are always such a big help, and we, as well as the patrons, enjoy their kindness and overall company as they serve within the Lighthouse Cafe.
The second week of August, we graciously opened our doors to a youth group from Nashville, Tennessee! They were a hard-working and fun group of young people! They assisted in preparing meals, serving food to the patrons, and helping to clean-up as well! Some of them also volunteered to help organize and straighten up within Ella’s Closet. One of their favorite experiences was making two commercial size pans of peach cobbler! Our patrons always enjoy spending time with new people too, so it is collectively such a gift for these groups of amazing young people to come to visit us.
Every day is genuinely such a blessing, and we are so thankful for the many incredible people who help us through volunteering, donating so generously, and ultimately making what we do possible. Daily, we are reminded of what an honor it is to be able to serve the Lord by caring for His people. As we continue to settle into our new “home,” we want you to know that we are always thinking of you and the many people who continue to pour into helping us achieve our mission!
As always, please continue to keep the Lighthouse Cafe in your prayers! Come and see us soon!
Love and Blessings,
Martha Lynn Weeks
