A new year has begun! It felt so good to return to serving our patrons after being closed through January 6th for the new year’s holidays. Betty, Leola, and I spent the first few days taking down the Christmas decorations & refreshing the cafe after the holidays.

In January, many of the students within the Glades communities show and sell their pigs at the South Florida Fair. This year, several generous sponsors purchased the pigs and donated the meat to us. We were so grateful for these donations.

On January 13th, we welcomed the L.O.T. Health Services, who provided ten people with eye exams. After the exam, they were fitted for glasses, which will be delivered back to them on February 10th. Each pair will cost $25.00. Then, on January 23rd and 24th, the Palm Beach County Health and Human Services Department utilized the Light House Cafe as a base to take a count of the homeless in our area.

On the last day of January, students and teachers from the Good Shepard School in Pahokee arrived at 9:00 AM and jumped right into serving! From bagging fruit to distribute to patrons, boxing sweet potatoes, and picking up trash outside, we were so appreciative of their help. When it was lunchtime, these awesome students actually handled the entire process of serving, assisting, and cleaning up! We are very thankful for their visit and welcome them back anytime!

We are delighted to say, the first month of the new year was a success! In total, we served 1,373 breakfasts, 3,201 lunches, and 832 snacks! Thank you to everyone who makes this possible!

God Bless,

Martha Lynn Weeks
